Energy Sources
Non-Renewable Energy Resources:
-fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas
Fossil Fuels: from plants and animals millions of years ago
Problems of using non-renewable resources:
1. We are running out of them and they are harder to find
2. Expensive because they are harder to find
3. Releases pollution into the environment
Renewable Energy Resources
- like sun, wind and flowing water
Problems:
1. Not always reliable
2. Some are expensive to use
3. Some effect the environment (eg. dams)

Renewable Energy:
Water Energy:
- called hydroelectricity
- created by dams controlling water
- water passes trough a turbine moving propellers attached to a generator
- sunlight turned into energy
- heat from sun collected and heats buildings and water
- burning plants produce heat and electricity
- biomass energy sources include wood, cornstalks, and sugarcane waste
- wind blows strong near mountains, coastlines and across prairies
- wind blows strongly enough to turn a turbine connected to a generator that creates electricity
- inside of earth is very hot and sometimes this heat comes to surface
- use this heat to warm our houses and make electricity
Nonrenewable Energy:
Nuclear:
Nuclear:
- made from Uranium, a mineral found in rocks in the ground
- split uranium atoms to release energy
- takes million of years to form
- is dug up from ground, moved to power plants and burned to make energy
- made from remains of plants and animals hundreds of million of years ago
- garbage makes methane (main gas in Natural Gas) and this is renewable
- liquid found under ground
- can turn into different fuels like gasoline, kerosene and heating oil
- most plastics and inks are made from petroleum
- gas that is burned to produce heat energy
- buried underground in sedimentary rocks
- mixed with natural gas and petroleum and separated at plants and refineries
