Term One: The Human Body

Grade 4's will choose one body part to do their research on. Choices are eyes, ears, mouth, nose and skin.
Grade 5's will choose one body system. Choices are respiratory, circulatory, digestive, muscular and skeletal system.

Notes on the human body:
Cells:
- body made up of 100 trillion cells.
- 40 000 red blood cells can fit in the letter O.
- 200 different kinds of cells
- Cells have different shapes because they have different jobs to do.
- longest cells are nerve cells - can be 100cm long.
Tissues:
-Groups of similar cells working together
-Four main kinds: Muscle, Nerve, Epithelial, and Connective
-Blood a kind of connective tissue made of blood cells floating in a liquid called plasma
Organs:
-Two or more tissues that work together form an organ
-50 organs in our body (examples: heart, eyes, skin, brain, stomach, intestines)
-largest organ is skin
Organ Systems:
-Groups of organs that work together are called organ systems and each carries out a major function
-12 organ systems in the human body (examples: skeletal, muscular, digestive, circulatory, respiratory and nervous system)
Blood:
- body's liquid messenger: brings oxygen and nutrients to body
- made in bone marrow
- pumped through body by heart
1) Red Blood cells: carry oxygen
2) White Blood cells: so we don't get sick
3) Platelets: clot blood so we don't bleed too much
4) Plasma: carries water, chemicals, hormones, protein etc. (good stuff)
